I’ve been making music and discovering the best singing gear for over 20 years. Here you’ll find my choice recommended gear for singers.
Why should I trust this list?
Firstly, I have personally owned, tested, and use every single one of these items week in and week out. I only feature and recommend items I have bought and use myself.
If you’re a singer looking for gear recommendations for:
– gigging live
– practicing in rehearsal rooms
– recording in your home studio
– preparing for a professional recording studio…
Then you’ve got the full selection below of what I thoroughly recommend.
Microphones
These are the microphones I use the most. If you’d like to learn how to use a microphone more correctly and professionally, I’ve explained this in detail in this instructional “how to sing properly into a microphone” guide.
Rode M1 Microphone
Want a workhorse mic with a different vibe to the standard SM58?
The Rode M1 is your answer. Modern sound, solid lows, a beautifully thick yet sweet midrange, and smooth top end.
Shure SM57 Microphone
An industry standard mic. I’ve recommended this over the SM58 many times.
This is a classic instrument AND vocal mic. Used by every US President for decades in their live speeches.
Audio Interfaces
Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 Interface
It’s a consumer standard for a reason
The Scarlett 212 is an exceptionally solid and affordable bit of kit. Get your sounds into your computer, with high quality and no fuss
Headphones / Monitors
Beyerdynamic DT770 Headphones
I’ve bought MULTIPLE pairs – they’re that essential
These headphones are super-comfy for wearing for hours at a time. Decent noise isolation and reasonably balanced sound for the price.
Presonus Eris 4.5 Monitors
Very affordable, tweakable and great sounding home studio monitors
I actually bought far more expensive monitors after these… and swapped BACK to using these, that’s how much I like them.
Books on Singing
Great Singers on Great Singing – Jerome Hines
An excellent read. Full of individual perspectives and insight on great singing, by those who did it best.
I’ve lent this book out countless times. Contains lesser heard insights from great singers like Maria Callas and Luciano Pavarotti to learn from.
