SUMMARY: What is our Saturday Voice Intensive?

About 2 years ago I started running a series of taster workshops, for those to ‘dip their toe in the water’ and learn about what our vocal training method involves. These were based on a good level of participant interaction, but for the last year I’ve changed the format to take it up a couple of notches. This is partly because I noticed that some people in the more basic workshops really wanted to dive deep into what was going on with their own voice, whereas others simply didn’t have that same level of seriousness about bettering their own voice.

As such, I’ve redesigned our group events to be a 100% interactive participant-focused session, and centred on making your voice better there and then. This voice intensive will still be covering the vocal technique that I teach, but through working on your voice in a highly focused and one-on-one way. We’ll certainly be talking theory, but we’re placing the emphasis on practical application to your voice, and we will be designing a bespoke vocal workout for you and your voice in our time together.

The key take-home point:

If what you really care about is hearing your voice get better in a short space of time, this is the event for you.

How can the Saturday Voice Intensive help you?

If you’re a singer who performs professionally or even just sings for your own pleasure, you’ve likely run into things with your voice that have made you think “Hmmm, that could definitely sound better“, ranging all the way to “that sounded and felt AWFUL“, or perhaps even more worrying issues like vocal damage, diminishing range or regular voice loss. We’re going to tackle all of these issues together.

How our methodology can help your voice

Before we dive into the exact details of what we’ll be covering, have a read of this singers’ experience and see if it resonates with you:

…When I began to sing in my band and do local gigs around Nottingham, I found some of the songs I wanted to sing I just couldn’t manage. I found myself having to shout to get the top notes, making the quality of the song sound strained, and just generally not very nice sounding whenever I tried to attempt to hit the high notes.

But then I went to an audition… and met Mark… I got talking to him about the voice and how it works. No other teacher had told me how we could treat the voice as an actual instrument and how I could possibly improve and fix those issues I was struggling with… and now I’ve seen a major difference with in my vocals – I have seen massive improvements. My voice is far more controlled and I am accessing even higher ranges with power and control.

WHAT WILL BE COVERED?

The main portion of the event will last approximately 1.5 – 2 hours. We’ll be working with each voice of each intensive participant in turn, illustrating the key principles we’re aiming for in building voices. All of this will be done with each voice in turn, i.e. you’ll get to work with me on your voice, one-on-one, and you’ll get to hear and feel your voice get better then and there. More than that, you’ll be able to hear others voices and singers experience the same result. There will also be time before and after to get to know each other and ask any burning questions.

To sing songs well, we need to build instruments that can deliver what we are after musically and artistically. To achieve this end, we need to fix functional issues in the voice that are preventing that technical freedom, and build it from there. Here’s the outline of the structure we’ll be following on the day:

1) Our philosophy on how we build a voice (as explained in our prospectus) – Once you “get” this and hear it in action, you’ll understand a LOT more about the issues you face in your own voice. We’ll be applying this to each voice in turn, so you can each hear and feel this. This portion is critical to understanding what good vocal technique entails.

2) Personalised voice exercises – To do the above, we need to apply correct voice exercises to build solid vocal technique in your voice. We’ll help you acquire this through the vocal tools and exercises we have in our toolbox. We’ll be looking at this closely. You’ll also be able to record your portion of the intensive to enable you to work on your voice afterwards, like recording a personal training workout.

BONUS: Bear in mind that you will also get to hear how other participants voices are built, and how they go together. This is hugely beneficial for hearing what we are aiming for, and is literally a lesson in itself as to how voices are meant to work, how they can deviate from the ideal, and how they can be put on the right track again.

3) Application to song – All the theory in the world is useless if we can’t become better singers, and sing songs more powerfully and expressively… songs are the real “road test” of how well put together a voice really is. This is the “rubber meets the road” stage of the intensive. You’ll have the opportunity to take everything you’ve acquired in step 2 where we’ve improved your voice, and apply that to song.

4) Future vocal development parameters – We will be covering a lot in our time together, but only so much can be done in a single session. As such we’ll be looking at giving you specific and personal tailored advice on how to better utilise what we have covered that day for your specific voice, and how to take that forward, e.g. make sure you stop repeating past errors, and build towards something better and long-lasting.

[Mark’s] knowledge of the functional implications of each sound and how to tailor them to my voice is second to none. I can feel and hear the difference with every [session] and my confidence builds with this. Mark has not only improved my voice but also given me the knowledge to identify my own tendencies and improve on them!

WHO IS IT FOR? WHY SHOULD I COME?

In short, we will work on your voice together then and there, and you’ll have a recording of everything we do so you can keep working on your voice.

If you want to hear your voice get better, and feel the difference then and there, then this is your opportunity. I will be working personally with your voice – you will be experiencing everything mentioned above in your own voice first hand. Perhaps you’ve got something that is tripping you up in your voice, or something else that you want to improve directly. Perhaps you have already worked with me before and want to dig deeper into how this approach works in your voice and hear it in other voices too. Whatever it is, this is EXACTLY the event for you.

Limited Numbers

Now, because the purpose of this voice intensive is to work intensively with every participant, spaces are extremely limited. There is a maximum of FOUR spaces available. This will be on a first come first serve basis, so please act quickly to avoid missing out. I’ll be closing registration 2 weeks before the date of the workshop. Please also note that I’ll only be running a limited number of these intensives in the next 12 months, so if you want to participate, get yourself booked on now.

Mark is really good at putting people at ease. He did a workshop with my choir, every single person was persuaded to sing on their own – even the shyest and oldest – and we were all very much helped by Mark’s expert advice. Based on the evidence of what is happening within my own voice, I would strongly recommend both the method and the teacher – Thanks Mark!

What are the details?

Our next voice intensive will be as follows:
When: 10am-12.15pm on Saturday 25 January 2020 SOLD OUT
Where: Mark’s Studio just off Nottingham Embankment
Price: £99.00

Bearing in mind that one-on-one sessions with me presently cost £229 per hour session, and that this intensive is 2+ hours, this workshop represents the best value way for you and I to get started working together on your voice one-on-one. I’ve I’d also point out that most of our events sell out within 48 hours of tickets being made available (the last one sold out in 11 minutes!), so you’ll need to act quick to avoid missing out.

The Saturday Voice Intensive is designed to be the best group format to have that issue with your voice, or that thing you’ve always wanted to be able to do looked at properly for the first time. As I’ve already said, places are limited, and once the spaces are gone, then you’ll be too late. To secure your spot, use the booking form below to purchase your ticket.
